D-Biotin or Biotin, also known as vitamin H and coenzyme R, is a water-soluble vitamin and also belongs to the vitamin B family, B7. Vitamin H (Biotin) is oxidised in the body to produce cis-retinal and trans-retinal. There are two types of photoreceptor cells in the human retina, of which rod cells are sensitive to low light and are associated with dark vision because they contain the photoreceptor substance optic violet, which is composed of optic egg cells and cis-retinal. When vitamin H is deficient, cis-retinal is not adequately replenished and rod cells cannot synthesise enough optic violet cells, resulting in night blindness.
